The whole thing was apparently caught on camera. Steve swam over the top of the ray, (in my humble opinioin, and because he was in the shallows, he prolly startled the ray while it was feeding. For those of you who don't know much about stingrays, they feed off creatures that live within the sandy ocean floor. The sift the sand away beneath them. So at low tide you can often see where they have been feeding by the large circular depressions left on the sand flats and Rays though usually none agressive will act when startled. Steve was above it, so the ray being below, would only have seen a dark outline, and most likely mistaled Steve for a tiger shark Which like to eat rays and turtles.) Anyways, apparently the barb pierced his heart, and Steve reacted by immediatley pulling the barb out. I can only speculate that perhaps he might have lasted longer if he had left the barb were it was for the time being. (I want to state here that Stingray venom, while causing severe pain, and swelling, is not toxic enough to kill you just on it's own... other factors need to be involved.) Cpr was preformed the whole of the thirty minute bopat ride to the nearest island, where a rescue helicopter met them.

Terri, Bindi and bob were not there. They were in tasmania on a hiking trip. And the whole world did not know before them. The media knew, but kept it out of the news until terri had been informed.

The prime minister has offered a state funeral for Steve Irwin, though it will ultimately be Terri's choice.
